World Cup trip pays off for charities

They travelled six thousand miles to the World Cup, yet never left Durham Tees Valley Airport—and managed to donate to charity over a pound for every mile!

That’s the achievement of the firefighters at the Airport who, together with other volunteers, took part in the marathon ‘’journey’ in the airport terminal, using exercise cycles, running and rowing machines in the run-up to the World Cup with the aim of raising funds for the Great North Air Ambulance and Macmillan Cancer Support Trust.

The team of around 30 had given themselves six days to complete the distance between the airport and South Africa but in the end they completed the challenge in just four days, raising a total of £6,250.

The funds have been shared equally between the two charities who were presented with their cheques at an auction evening at the St George Hotel at the Airport.

Firefighters Mark Wilkinson and Rob Stenhouse first came up with the idea of an event linked to the World Cup and say they were overwhelmed with the support they received from those who took part—and from the public.

Says Rob “We thought the interest in the World Cup would be a great opportunity to raise funds for two very worthwhile charities—and I had a personal motivation. My sister, Karen Norrie died earlier this year and I wanted to do something in her memory, so we came up with the idea of a relay to complete the distance to South Africa,”

“We had great support for so many people—including our firefighters and colleagues from Durham Fire Service, together with other members of the airport staff—and I’m sure that the fact they raised over a pound for each and every mile they completed made it all worthwhile.”
