A major campaign to strengthen the links between Durham Tees Valley Airport and the region’s business community has got off to a flying start.
Over 50 companies from across the North East gathered at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium for the launch of the airport’s ‘Travel Pledge’ initiative where businesses commit to making Durham Tees Valley their first choice for travel wherever possible.
Amongst the first signatories for the Pledge were a number of large local engineering and technology companies, including ABB Engineering and Tracerco together with Middlesbrough Football Club and Weston Aviation —support welcomed by the Airport’s recently-appointed new Director Mike Morton.
Explained Mike “As soon as I arrived at the airport I made it clear that we wanted to work with the local community in developing the airport—and especially local businesses because they are key customers and we need their support to maintain our existing services...and attract the kind of new routes they require.
“We recognise that many of our businesses increasingly find themselves competing in international, and indeed worldwide, markets which make transport links vital. At Durham Tees Valley we are committed to providing as many services as possible—recently we have seen the introduction of the new Eastern Airways service to Southampton, providing convenient access to the South East, together with the launch of the Aer Lingus service to Dublin.
“In addition KLM’s three-times-a-day service to Amsterdam provides access to destinations across the world and the popular Eastern Airways flights to Aberdeen offer onward links to Northern European destinations including Bergen.
“The Travel Pledge is, we believe, an initiative from which we can all benefit—the more businesses prepared to support the pledge the more it will help us to provide the services which you and others require.”
Added Gillian Form from ABB’s Business Development Team “We have a close relationship with the airport and we fully back their efforts to provide the kind of flights we need. The Pledge is an initiative where everyone can benefit—the airport is able to maintain and expand its services and that helps our business.”
Also at the event was Weston Aviation, the private aircraft charter company which is based at Durham Tees Valley Airport.
Commented Becky Carver, General Manager of Weston Aviation, “We are very pleased with the level of interest we’ve received today from the Fly Local event. People have been surprised at how affordable it is to charter a private aircraft, and in today’s hectic business schedule it makes sense to be as efficient and flexible as possible. In addition, we also have our own Business Aviation Centre at the airport to make that trip even more convenient.”
Companies signing up to the Pledge will receive a range of incentives, including car parking and lounge access, together with regular business and leisure travel offers and the company logo on the Airport website www.dtva.co.uk
