Link road approval boosts plan to secure airport

30/11/2015

Planning approval for a multi-million pound development at Durham Tees Airport has been described as ‘a very significant step forward in delivering the objective of maximising the potential of the airport.’

Durham Tees Valley Airport Managing Director Steve Gill was speaking after Darlington Council’s Planning Committee had joined with Stockton Council in approving plans for the construction of a new 1.8 kilometre link road between the north and south sides of the airport, running around the eastern end of the runway, together with a large building forming the first phase of the Southside Business Park.

Following the approval form the local authorities it is expected that work on site will begin next April, with the project taking 12 months to complete. The Airports parent company, the Peel Group is providing a £5million investment, with a further £5million earmarked through the Government’s Local Growth Fund, overseen by the Local Enterprise Partnership Tees Valley Unlimited.

Marketed under the brand Aero Centre Tees Valley, the Southside Business Park will offer opportunities for developments including industrial, warehousing and logistics businesses, with the potential to create 3,000 jobs and contribute £11million a year to the local economy.

Said Steve Gill “The Master Plan for the future of Durham Tees Valley, published last year, made clear that making full use of all development opportunities across the site, coupled with establishing a major hub for business and general aviation, was at the heart of supporting and securing the air services needed by the region.

“A key element in delivering the Master Plan is opening up the potential of the Southside, including the development of aviation-related activities adjacent to the runway. That is what the plan for the new link road is all about and confirmation of planning approval from the two authorities is a very significant and welcome step forward.”

Work is continuing on other aspects of implementing the Master Plan, including plans for a range of mixed-use developments on the north side of the airport.
