Airport to host round Britain air rally

Ten years ago saw the first Around-Britain Air Rally for private flying enthusiasts and this summer the event is to be staged again, with Durham Tees Valley providing an overnight stop on the ten-day route.

The rally, which is expected to attract a wide range of aircraft, is aimed at giving pilots a chance to try their hand at ‘aerial touring’ and is being planned by members of the same group who took part in the 2004 event.

The organisers of the event, which is free to enter, arrange and brief the airfields being visited but pilots must do their own planning.

The rally will leave Leicester on Wednesday June 4th with an overnight stop at Durham Tees Valley the following day, before moving on to airports across England, Wales and Scotland before the final stop at Duxford on June 13th.

Says Durham Tees Valley Commercial Director Andy Foulds:

We are delighted that the organisers have chosen the airport to be included as an overnight stop on their route and look forward to welcoming a wide variety of aircraft and pilots. We have an active and growing private flying community here at Durham Tees Valley and I’m sure it will generate a lot of interest.
