Background Information

Durham Tees Valley Airport (DTVA) was originally an important RAF airfield during the Second World War.  DTVA began commercial operations as Teesside Airport in the mid 1960’s under local authority control, providing services to both the local business community and leisure passengers.

DTVA is situated 10 miles to the west of Middlesbrough in North East England.

In April 2003 The Peel Airport Group reached an agreement with the six local authority shareholders (Durham, Darlington, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Councils), to acquire a 75 percent shareholding in the Airport with the local authorities retaining a 25 percent interest in the company. In June 2010, Vancouver Airport Services acquired a 65 percent share in Peel Airports, which includes DTVA.   The six local authorities continue to own 25 percent of Durham Tees Valley Airport.

In 2009, the airport served over 300,000 passengers.

Principle airlines providing services at the Airport include KLM, Eastern Airways and Aer Lingus Regional. The Airport has strong links with partner airlines, including KLM whose regular services to their Amsterdam Schiphol hub, provides access to their world wide flight network and Eastern Airways who recently launched a new service to Southampton, providing easy access to the South East. Other recent additions have seen the return of services to Dublin, operated by Aer Lingus/Aer Arann and a new summer service to Jersey.

Significant recent investment includes the completion of a new access road to the terminal and car park improvements.

Plans have been announced for a unique ‘twin terminal’ redevelopment, dividing the terminal into two separate areas to enhance passenger facilitation and services. One will be a ‘premium’ area targeted at scheduled services and business travelers and the other will handle holiday charter and ‘low cost’ services.

The renaming of the Airport to Durham Tees Valley Airport in 2004, helped to locate it on the international travel map, and provide a modern and convenient gateway to the region for visitors, further cementing the airport's commitment to regional tourism.
